2. SOUNDBITE (English) Gideon Saar, Israeli Foreign Minister:
"What I’m saying (is) if they are so enthusiastic to establish a Palestinian state, they have huge territories, Spain and France. If they are so enthusiastic to do that, they can do that in their own territories”
3. Wide of Saar and Szijjártó at news conference
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Gideon Saar, Israeli Foreign Minister:
"We will not risk Israel in (with) indefensible borders. The distance between the terrorists that went this morning from their houses in the Palestinian Authority territories to Jerusalem to attack Israeli citizens on the bus is a few miles, not more than a few miles. And we learned, after the Oslo agreements, and after the withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, that every territory we are leaving becomes this vacuum immediately terror organisations are taking it over them. So we will not repeat the mistakes of the past.”
5. Wide of Saar and Szijjártó
6. SOUNDBITE (English) Gideon Saar, Israeli Foreign Minister:
"Based on its actions, the PA (Palestinian Authority) does not deserve a state. US Secretary Rubio recently made it clear; the PA and PLO are not meeting their most basic obligations from the Oslo Accords over 30 years ago.”
7. Wide of Saar and Szijjártó
8. SOUNDBITE (English) Gideon Saar, Israeli Foreign Minister:
"To hear the prime minister of Spain preaching to us about the killing in Gaza- I didn’t hear anything from him after the terror attack this morning, somehow. (Pauses) We decided, and I announced today, that we will not allow two Spanish ministers to enter to Israel and we will not engage with them in any matter after their consistent anti-Semite and anti-Israeli rhetorics.”
9. Wide of Saar and Szijjártó
10. SOUNDBITE (English) Gideon Saar, Israeli Foreign Minister:
"It’s an illusion to think that the future of Judea and Samaria, the cradle of the Jewish people, will be determined in Paris, in Madrid, or in Brussels. It will be determined only in Jerusalem."
11. Wide of Saar and Szijjártó
12. SOUNDBITE (Hungarian) Péter Szijjártó, Hungarian Foreign Minister:
"As far as relations between the European Union and Israel are concerned, there is a very strong hostility towards Israel in some northern, western and southern member states of the European Union. A very strong hostility towards Israel can be heard during the debates at the Foreign Affairs Council. Unfortunately, in Western Europe, this can also be felt in the everyday life."
13. Wide of Saar and Szijjártó shaking hands
STORYLINE:
Israel has banned two left-wing Spanish ministers from entering the country, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar announced on Monday.
Speaking during a visit to Hungary, Saar accused Sánchez of using the issue to divert attention from domestic scandals and labelled the actions as antisemitic.
"We will not allow two Spanish ministers to enter to Israel and we will not engage with them in any matter after their consistent anti-Semite and anti-Israeli rhetorics,” he said during a news conference in Budapest with his Hungarian counterpart, Péter Szijjártó.
Spain’s government has been an outspoken critic of Israel’s war in Gaza, which began after Hamas-led militants killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, on Oct. 7, 2023, and abducted 251 hostages.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has intensified criticism of Israel’s actions in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
