"I dissent, we all dissent because from the beginning we have known that Los Angeles has been used as a test case for total dominance and unchecked power by the federal government. We have been used as a test case to begin to normalize military intervention and takeover of our cities. And standing united, we took their unlawful and unconstitutional tactics to court, and we won not once, but twice. Two different courts ruled in our favor, in favor of the people and our immigrant population that law enforcement cannot racially profile and discriminate against Latinos, against Angelenos based on their race."

"A mark of authoritarianism is a country where the government can stop you and ask you to show your papers. Papers, please. That is not Los Angeles. That is not America, and that is not the country that we want to live in. A mark of racism is a country where you can be stopped because of how you look. Apartheid South Africa is a great example of that, where you have to provide papers because of your appearance. That is unacceptable. That is not acceptable in Los Angeles and that that’s not acceptable in our country."

"This isn’t about making America great again. Over 70% of the people I have in custody have no criminal records. It’s never been about criminals. It’s never been about people who have anything on the records. It’s been about who they don’t want to see in this country anymore. And they’re starting with Latinos, and they will be coming for others. Recognize that. They already taking citizens. It doesn’t matter. Wake up."

"Today, Supreme Court Conservative majority handed down a ruling many of us feared but expected. By siding with the Trump administration, this court’s majority has revealed itself as highly prejudicial and has further empowered authoritarianism in this country. Immigration agents are now being given the power to profile, stop, detain and arrest people because of the color of their skin, the language they speak, or the work that they do. In doing so, they have effectively legalized racial profiling and by extension, racial discrimination."

STORYLINE:
The Supreme Court on Monday cleared the way for federal agents to conduct sweeping immigration operations for now in Los Angeles, the latest victory for President Donald Trump’s administration at the high court.
Democratic leaders in California condemned the decision. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said she has directed city departments to follow rules barring the use of municipal resources on federal immigration enforcement.
“From the beginning we have known that Los Angeles has been used as a test case for total dominance and unchecked power by the federal government,” Bass told reporters.
