"Israel has launched an attack on Doha, Qatar, targeting the political leadership of the militant group Hamas. Now, Qatar’s come out strongly condemning the strike that apparently happened when Hamas leaders were talking about a ceasefire deal now on the table over the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip. Israel has been threatening to launch a new offensive on Gaza City. We still don’t know just how many people were hurt or killed in this attack, but it marks the second time that Qatar, an energy-rich nation on the Arabian Peninsula that has been targeted during the Mideast wars that came from Hamas’ initial October 7, 2023 attack on Israel. Back in June, Iran launched an attack on a Qatari air base home to U.S. airmen over the Americans bombing Iranian nuclear sites. But this time is different. The Qataris have come out strongly against Israel. We’ve also seen regional countries like the United Arab Emirates also say that they back Qatar in this, so this likely will further strain the relationships that Israel has with the Gulf Arab countries, which it’s been so desperate to try to make diplomatic recognition deals with and likely is going to cause more tension in the wider Middle East as this offensive looms."

STORYLINE:
Israel launched a strike on Hamas’ leadership in Qatar on Tuesday as they discussed a U.S. proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza, officials said.
It marked a stunning extension of Israel’s campaign against the militant group and risked upending negotiations aimed at winding down the war and releasing Israeli hostages.
Black smoke rose over the skyline of the Qatari capital, Doha, with authorities there acknowledging the strike.
It wasn’t immediately clear if anyone was hurt in the attack.
The assault marks the second time the energy-rich nation has been directly attacked in the nearly two years of war that have gripped the wider Middle East since Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel.
Qatar has served as a key negotiator in efforts to end the conflict. It also calls into question whether any negotiations immediately will continue.
