“This is only an interim government because we have so much threat that exist against our country. We can’t let an army rule and need to protect the democracy. To save our democracy, we can’t allow any external forces to come in so we have made our choice for an interim government which will be there only for some time. We need a government now and the old one is unacceptable.”

STORYLINE:
Nepalese soldiers guarded the streets of the country’s capital on Wednesday and ordered people to stay at home as they moved to restore order after tens of thousands of protesters stormed and set fire to government buildings and attacked politicians.

Negotiations between representatives and the protesters started during the day at the Nepal army headquarters, but no decision was reached.

Rehan Raj Dangal, a representative of the protesters, said they have proposed Sushila Karki, a former chief justice, to head an interim government.

Karki is the only female to serve as the chief justice of the supreme court.

She served in the post between 2016-2017 and was a popular figure.

A small crowd had gathered outside the army headquarters and several of them were opposing Karki as the choice.

Armed troops guarding the main areas of Kathmandu appeared to give some sense of control returning to the city that was engulfed in violence and chaos in the previous days.

Soldiers told residents about the curfew in place as they checked vehicles and people.

The army warned late Tuesday that security forces were committed to preserving law and order.

The military is rarely mobilized in Nepal and initially stayed in the barracks as police failed to control the situation.

An army statement said 27 suspected looters have been arrested.

The demonstrations — dubbed the protest of Gen Z — began after the government blocked social media platforms, including Facebook, X and YouTube, saying those companies had failed to register and submit to government oversight.
