STORYLINE:
Clashes erupted in the Ecuadorian capital Quito on Thursday during protests against the government of President Daniel Noboa.
Noboa, a businessman and politician serving his second term since May, has implemented an economic policy that has led to thousands of layoffs, aiming to cut down the salaries of the government’s employees.
His government has mainly focused on fighting against organized crime, amid an increase in violence in the Andean country.
The protesters advanced toward Quito’s center, where the government palace is located, demanding the president’s resignation.
Upon reaching a square where they intended to gather, police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd, and protesters began clashing with the police. The clashes ended the demonstration prematurely.
Authorities did not immediately report injuries or arrests.
