STORYLINE:
The wife of assassinated Colombian senator Miguel Uribe Turbay called on Colombians Thursday to "remain united", adding that "security will reign once again."
Claudia Tarazona spoke alongside her husband’s father and now presidential candidate, Miguel Uribe Londoño, in Bogota’s El Golfito Park – the site where her husband was fatally shot twice in the head at close range during a campaign rally in June.
Uribe Turbay, a conservative presidential hopeful, died from his injuries in hospital in August.
"Today more than ever, Colombians, we must remain steadfast in our faith. Our country is going through the worst of evils, the darkest of times," said Tarazona.
"The days of this dark and destructive evil are numbered in our country. Let us remain united. Security will reign once again, true peace will return, and decency will govern," she added.
After speaking in the park, Tarazona and members of her family laid flowers at Uribe’s grave in Bogota’s Central Cemetery.
The shooting of Uribe, which was caught on multiple videos, alarmed Colombians who have not seen this kind of political violence against presidential candidates since Medellin drug lord Pablo Escobar declared war on the state in the 1990s.
The senator was among the strongest critics of Colombia’s current government. In October, he joined the list of politicians seeking to replace Gustavo Petro, the first leftist to govern Colombia, in the May 2026 elections.
In August, Uribe Londoño launched his own bid for the presidency in what he called an effort keep his son’s legacy alive and build a safer and more prosperous Colombia.
A teenager who admitted to the shooting was sentenced in August to seven years of detention at a youth rehabilitation facility.
