STORYLINE:
China’s consumption and factory production continued to be under strain in August as government stimulus efforts to boost growth were challenged by weak domestic demand and external risks.

Spokesperson of the National Bureau of Statistics Fu Linghui said industrial output rose 5.2% in August, down from 5.7% in July.

Retail sales grew by 3.4% from a year earlier, slowing from the July’s growth of 3.7%.

Export, a key growth driver of Chinese economy, increased by 4.8% in August, the slowest in recent six months.

Trade representatives of China and the US are having their third round of talks in Madrid this week to address the tariff disputes fueled by China’s large trade surplus with he US.

Beijing has rolled out a series of stimulus measures, including providing subsidies on consumer goods and regulating excess capacity and price competition of EV industries. However, these moves have yet to prove effective in reviving an economy weighed down by the property market downturn and weak consumer spending.

“The external environment remains complex and severe, with many unstable and uncertain factors. Domestically, supply is strong but demand is weak, and some enterprises are facing operational difficulties,” Fu said.
