STORYLINE:
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz welcomed Polish President Karol Nawrocki for talks at the German chancellery in Berlin Tuesday.
Nawrocki is seeking World War II reparations with Germany, while also looking for joint cooperation and support, after Russia breached airspace along NATO’s eastern flank.
Nawrocki spoke to German newspaper Bild on Monday about reparations that he said Germany still owes Poland over World War II.
Poland’s government said in September 2022 that it will seek equivalent of some $1.3 trillion, following the release of a report on the cost of the Nazi invasion and occupation.
It claimed the German economy is capable of paying the bill.
Germany considers the matter closed, arguing that compensation was paid to Eastern Bloc nations in the years after the war while territories that Poland lost in the East were compensated with some of Germany’s pre-war lands.
