3. SOUNDBITE (English) Bibhu Mohapatra, designer – on how India gives him inspiration:
"Because that’s my identity, right? And where, you know, there is no way –and I’m not gonna get political here — but I think our uniqueness is what defines us, right? And my story is unique, as is yours. And that individuality is, we cannot, you now. So my roots are everything. That’s where I stand on, and it’s not only that. That’s also I look up to my culture, my people and I show them to my people here because I belong everywhere and I’m just trying to build bridges. Right now, with this collection, I’m building a bridge from 20th century to 21st century and how the same energy, how same definition of women, womanhood, is being sort of replicated And also a few months back one of the Supreme Court in India defined what is womanhood? And they actually, Supreme Court, gave rights to trans women as women. And where, everywhere else, that right has been taken away. And I was so proud that — India is a traditional country — that it took that step."

STORYLINE:
Bibhu Mohapatra’s spring 2026 ready-to-wear collection is inspired by trailblazing women in his homeland of India, blending tradition with modernity.
"My roots are everything," the designer said backstage before his runway show on Monday as part of New York Fashion Week. "Right now, with this collection, I’m building a bridge from 20th century to 21st century and how the same energy, how same definition of women — womanhood — is being sort of replicated."
The clothing included the sculptural dresses and gowns that it’s known for but also denim from India, blazers, vests and trousers in vibrant colors.
