STORYLINE:
House Speaker Mike Johnson led a vigil at the U.S. Capitol for Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated during a college event in Utah last week.
“This has been a very difficult week in America,” Johnson said as he opened the service.
Lawmakers gathered in Statuary Hall, many holding electric candles, for the evening vigil. Some people cried, and candles were left by a large photo of Kirk and his family.
The vigil was mainly attended by Republican lawmakers from the House, but a few Democrats were also in attendance.
Johnson closed in prayer, seeking encouragement for Americans to remember that “we are indeed one nation under God.”
