"Marie Antoinette is arguably kind of the first fashion icon. I mean, she’s certainly an early modern celebrity, as we would consider her today. And her influence is so universal now, although she was queen of France, you know, she’s influential across the world."
"So there has never been an exhibition on Marie Antoinette in the U.K, which is very surprising, I think, given her broad appeal. And there is a lot of interest and fascination for Marie Antoinette in this country, partly because of Lady Antonia Fraser’s biography that was a huge sort of worldwide bestseller, and then also because of Sofia Coppola’s film that was made based on that book as well. So there’s a huge interest in Marie Antoinette in Britain, and Britain also plays quite a role in her story, in that it was British collectors in the 19th century who were buying up parts of her collection when they came to auction, because during the revolution all the objects in the royal palaces were dispersed, they were sold in revolutionary sales."

"Obviously we wanted to have an 18th century section. So we wanted to have a section that was really rich in objects associated with Marie Antoinette to show the key elements of her style. And because her style, as I said, is really broad, it has all these different kind of phases, we wanted to choose the aspects of her style that resonate most with people today that people would recognize. And they’d say, ‘That’s Marie Antoinette’ or ‘I know that to be Marie Antoinette.’ So we brought together really the best objects in terms of 18th century dress and textiles. We wanted to show just how beautiful those objects from that period were."
