Germany has yet to recognize Palestinian statehood: What would it take for it to do so? | DW News

On Monday, several Western countries recognized the state of Palestine at the UN General Assembly. Germany is not among them, and Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s government will not be formally recognizing Palestinian statehood “in the short term”. In August, Merz stated: "We do not consider the conditions for state recognition to be fulfilled in any way at present. Recognition must be the final step in a peace process that results in a two-state solution.” Despite Germany’s position, political pressure on the federal government from civil society is growing.
