3. SOUNDBITE (Serbian) Tamara Filipovic Stefanovic, the Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia:
”We gathered in solidarity with the journalists killed in the Gaza Strip. This is the least we could do, because this topic kind of slips under our radar. The situation is difficult in Serbia as well, and people are exhausted by the protests, but the media blockade is difficult to break and genocide is happening in Gaza. The number of journalists killed in this conflict is enormous. This has not been seen before, this is a war crime that must be investigated and someone must be held accountable for what has happened.”

STORYLINE:
Media associations in Serbia held protests in Belgrade Thursday in solidarity with journalists who have been killed in Gaza.
Numerous journalists and others employed by media associations attended the protest, where they read the names of journalists who had been killed by Israel, and held a minute of silence.
Tamara Filipovic Stefanovic, from the Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia, told the Associated Press that the protest was the bare minimum.
"The number of journalists killed in this conflict is enormous," she said.
"This has not been seen before, this is a war crime that must be investigated and someone must be held accountable for what has happened,” she added.
The protest also honoured journalists who had been killed in the West Bank.
One protester held an image of Shireen Abu Akleh, a reporter for Al Jazeera who was shot and killed by Israeli forces while reporting in the West Bank in May 2022.
Since the war in Gaza began, nearly 242 journalists have been killed by Israeli forces, according to the International Federation of Journalists.
They include men and women, freelancers and staffers, veterans with years in the field and young reporters on some of their first assignments.
Israel is currently waging a major ground offensive in Gaza City that has forced over 200,000 Palestinians to flee, according to the United Nations.
