STORYLINE:
Pope Leo XIV addresses Donald Trump, the clergy sexual abuse crisis, LGBTQ+ Catholics, and the Vatican’s relations with China in a new biography launched Thursday in Peru.

The book, “Leo XIV: Citizen of the World, Missionary of the 21st Century,” was written by Vatican correspondent Elise Ann Allen of the news site Crux. It includes a lengthy interview with the pontiff, released in full alongside the book.

Publisher Penguin Random House described the work as “a comprehensive and unprecedented portrait of the new pope.” The biography traces Leo’s life “from his childhood in Chicago and his early vocation as an Augustinian to his years as a missionary in Peru and his leadership in the Vatican,” according to the publisher’s website.

“Today is the book launch, and we have high expectations, especially in provincial bookstores, since this figure is highly esteemed by Peruvians,” said Kyrlla Acuña, manager of SBS bookstore in Lima.

In the interview, Leo reflected on his relationship with the Trump administration, the Church’s handling of sexual abuse, efforts to welcome LGBTQ+ Catholics, and the Holy See’s diplomacy with Beijing.
