"I believe there are things I can do from my experience of being a freshman when LDP was an opposition party. To the people of Japan. I am aware that the current LDP is not in a position to say big things. So please, see us moving forward one step at a time. With the determination of taking the lead to unite the Liberal Democratic Party and to drive politics forward, I announce my candidacy in the leadership race for the Liberal Democratic Party."

"I am fully aware of the fact that there are candidates who are more experienced and have skills that I do not have. To grasp others’ strengths and being able to work together with them as a team are my forte. I would like to keep on putting an effort in gaining trust gradually by recognising what I lack in and by delivering good results."

STORYLINE:
Shinjiro Koizumi, the son of a popular former prime minister, officially announced his candidacy in the upcoming leadership race for Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party on Saturday.

"With the determination of taking the lead to unite the Liberal Democratic Party and to drive politics forward, I announce my candidacy in the leadership race for the Liberal Democratic Party," Koizumi said during a news conference in Tokyo.

Koizumi vowed to rebuild his party and listen to the public more closely to address their concerns, such as rising prices, as well as the growing foreign population.

It makes it his second bid after running against Shigeru Ishiba last year when he campaigned to reform the scandal-laden party.

If elected on Oct. 4, he will be Japan’s youngest leader since Hirobumi Ito, who in 1885 became the first Japanese premier at 44.
