STORYLINE:
Interim President Gen. Mamadi Doumbouya voted on Sunday morning in Conakry’s Kaloum neighborhood in a constitutional referendum that could lead to his run for the presidency.
One of the key elements of the proposed constitution is that it would allow him to run for president in elections slated for December, currently forbidden under Guinean law.
Doumbouya took power in a 2021 coup d’etat that deposed former president Alpha Conde, who had pressed for a constitutional referendum that would have paved the way for him to seek a third term in office.
Conde’s bid to extend his rule sparked violent demonstrations by those who said he had bent the rule on term limits to his benefit.
Doumbouya led the Guinean army’s special forces unit before seizing power in the coup.
After the coup, Doumbouya cast himself as a patriot of Guinea, which he said remained poor despite decades of independence from its former colonizer, France.
