“Today, Britain has recognized a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital, God willing. This is a great honor because of the struggles of the Palestinian people and also the political leadership in Palestine. We call on all countries of the world, as we called ten days ago at the Human Rights Council, to recognize a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital in order to achieve just peace and international legitimacy. This is an acquired right of the Palestinian people.”

4. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Abdullah Fayad, Ramallah resident:
“We thank them for the belated recognition. We cannot forget that they are the reason for the occupation of our land, due to the Balfour Declaration. They gave those who do not own to those who do not deserve it. But this is a step in the right direction. We hope that other countries will follow Britain’s example. And what is also most important is that the recognition be embodied on the ground, not just on paper. We also hope to see a complete Palestinian state from the sea to the river.”

6. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Hussam Abu Nasr, Ramallah resident:
“Certainly, these successive recognitions raise the morale of the Palestinian people, as they confirm that the blood of our Palestinian people has not been shed in vain. On the contrary, all these sacrifices. From 1948 until today, our people continue to offer martyrs, wounded, and prisoners. Therefore, this recognition reaffirms the right of the Palestinian people to their historical rights in Palestine, especially since Israel is doing everything it can to prevent this.”

STORYLINE:
Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank welcomed the UK’s decision to formally recognize a Palestinian state on Sunday.
“This is a great honor because of the struggles of the Palestinian people and also the political leadership in Palestine. We call on all countries of the world, as we called ten days ago at the Human Rights Council, to recognize a Palestinian state,” said Dr. Salah al-Din Samara, a Ramallah resident.
Ramallah resident Abdullah Fayad called the decision “belated recognition”, but agreed it is a “step in the right direction”.
“We thank them for the belated recognition. We cannot forget that they are the reason for the occupation of our land, due to the Balfour Declaration,” he said.
“We hope that other countries will follow Britain’s example. And what is also most important is that the recognition be embodied on the ground, not just on paper.”
Australia and Canada also formally recognized a Palestinian state, prompting an angry response from Israel, which ruled out the prospect.
The coordinated initiative from the three Commonwealth nations and long-time allies reflects growing outrage at Israel’s conduct of the war in Gaza and the steps taken by the Israeli government to thwart efforts to create a Palestinian state, including by the continued expansion of settlements in the West Bank.
More than 140 countries have already recognized a Palestinian state, with others expected to follow at the U.N. General Assembly.
