“I would be naive to think that poaching is not a threat, even though that we haven’t had incidents in many years, poaching is always a threat, especially considering that we’ve got quite a large community on our boundary. It’s not about whether poaching is a threat. It’s about how we respond to that threat and each reserve, it’s got its own unique risk profile and capacities and what we’ve been doing at Dinokeng, obviously is working so far."

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Marius Fuls, Wildlife monitor at Dinokeng Game Reserve:
"If I can make a plea on behalf of conservationists, rangers, wildlife monitors on World Rhino Day to the public is that please, please, please, do not expect of rangers to go out in the bush and just shoot poachers. That’s not something that rangers need to hear. It’s easy to ask it, but to do it is something totally different. Secondly, please do not tell a ranger that we’re not going to win this war. If we as conservationists stop believing that we’re going to win this, then we have lost it. We’re the last thin green line between the extinction of rhinos."

14. SOUNDBITE (English) Gillian Rhodes, Peace Parks Foundation:
“Back in 2014 at the height of the crisis, we were losing, I think in excess of 1,400 rhinos a year for several years. I think it’s quite phenomenal that a decade later despite intensive pressure, like that we really have managed to suppress and hold back the problem. I think the thing with South Africa is that some of our systems, in some places still require a lot of strengthening and we’ve got work to do."

16. SOUNDBITE (English) Gillian Rhodes, Peace Parks Foundation:
“South Africa has been notoriously really good at conservation, all of the conservation institutions that Peace Parks Foundation is privileged to work with have been at the forefront of conservation for many years and as a result we still have some of the biggest rhino population in the world, both white and black rhinos and as a result we have really been the target of rhino poaching and organized crime."

Conservationists in South Africa are marking World Rhino Day on 22 September under the shadow of poaching.

The country is home to most of the world’s black and white rhinos, but that also makes it the epicentre of the battle to protect them.

STORYLINE:

The Dinokeng Game Reserve in South Africa has a thriving rhino population, but their exact numbers and the details of the security operation that keeps them safe from poaching are closely guarded secrets.
