STORYLINE:
China on Tuesday lashed out at the U.S., Japan and South Korea after the three allies issued a joint statement voicing concerns over "increasingly frequent destabilizing actions" around Taiwan.
The statement, released following talks in New York between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Japan’s Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya, and South Korea’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Hyun, urged a peaceful resolution on the Taiwan issue and rejected attempts to “unilaterally change the status quo.”
In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun accused the statement of “interfering” in internal affairs of China, which claimed the self-ruled island as part of its territory.
