STORYLINE:
The head of the Palestinian mission to France said on Tuesday that the recognition of a Palestinian state alone is not enough, urging concrete actions including sanctions.

Hala Abou Hassira said at a news conference in Paris " recognitions alone are not enough without actions, without a real plan to end this historical injustice."

France recognized Palestinian statehood on Monday at the start of a high-profile meeting at the United Nations aimed at galvanizing support for a two-state solution to the Mideast conflict.

French President Emmanuel Macron’s announcement in the U.N. General Assembly hall received loud applause from the more than 140 leaders in attendance.

"How will we compel Israel to abide by the international will and comply with international law? It is through practical measures, foremost among them are sanctions. This is what we are waiting for, and this is what we hope for because we simply hope to live in peace," Abou Hassira said.

Andorra, Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta, and Monaco also announced or confirmed their recognition of a Palestinian state, a day after the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Portugal did.

The expanded recognition of Palestinian statehood are expected to have little if any actual impact on the ground, where Israel is waging another major offensive in the Gaza Strip and expanding settlements in the occupied West Bank.
