"I have written several historical novels, and by studying the past I can see the present with a certain perspective and imagine the future. Sometimes it seems that humanity is moving backwards, this is one of those moments. There is so much injustice, cruelty, and stupidity that we lose hope. But it’s not true that we go around in circles like dogs chasing their tails. We move in spirals, and with each turn we learn something."

11. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Rosa Devés, Rector of the University of Chile:
"Isabel Allende represents the most universal spirit of Chile. Because although she has lived in many other parts of the world she spent quite some time in Venezuela, and of course, most of her life in the United States, she always carries Chile with her. So this feeling we sometimes have here, of being on an island, in a distant place, at the end of the world, she places it universally in the world."

STORYLINE:
Chilean writer Isabel Allende, a best selling author and the most widely read living Spanish-language writer, was awarded on Tuesday the Rector’s Medal of the University of Chile.

“I wholeheartedly thank you for this unexpected medal that honors and brings me joy,” said the 83-year-old author after receiving the award at a ceremony held at the university’s headquarters in Santiago.

The author of more than thirty novels, including the bestsellers ‘The House of the Spirits’, ‘Eva Luna’ and ‘Violeta,’ had in the past received other awards including the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2014), the highest civilian honor in the United States; the National Book Award’s Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters (2018); and the Bodley Medal from the University of Oxford (2024).

The National Literature Prize winner is currently in Chile promoting her most recent novel, ‘My Name is Emilia del Valle,’ published in May, which tells the story of a young Californian journalist sent to Chile to cover the events of a bloody civil war and the tragic death of a deposed president.

A self-declared feminist with a strong emphasis on the defense of human rights, the themes of Chile’s dictatorship and repression are recurring in Allende’s vast body of work. She is the niece of former Chilean President Salvador Allende, who took his own life in 1973 during the coup led by General Augusto Pinochet that ushered in a 17-year dictatorship, leaving more than 40,000 victims.

Reflecting on today’s tensions and uncertainties, the writer stressed that “sometimes it seems that humanity is moving backwards” amid “so much cruelty and stupidity.” Nevertheless, she reminded that “everything changes, everything is temporary, and the great arc of history may in fact be one of more progress, more knowledge, and more intuition.”
