4. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Gustavo Petro, President of Colombia:
"Barbarism is of global concern, it’s now affecting all of humanity. The missiles that hit 17 unarmed young men in Caribbean waters, maybe some of them Colombians…the imprisonment, chaining and expulsion of migrants… the missiles that fell on over 70,000 people in Gaza, killing them. The lack of action over the climate crisis, words which are being erased by (Donald) Trump, it’s all linked and due to one reason. Migration is an excuse for a wealthy, white and racist society that thinks of themselves as the superior race, and for them to look away from where their leaders take them, along with all of humanity, to the abyss of its own extinction."

6. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Gustavo Petro, President of Colombia:
"It’s being said the missiles in the Caribbean were to stop drugs. This is a lie, which was said just right here. 2023 and 2024 were the years in which the most cocaine was seized, and more than 700 drug lords were extradited to the U.S. and Europe. It was me who extradited them, and the cocaine was seized by my government. We did not launch a single missile or kill a single young man. Those were the years in which I proved that it was more effective to voluntarily substitute the coca fields and eradicate it with glyphosate and force the poor peasants of Colombia (out of that line of work). I changed the failed and violent war on drugs for an efficient anti-narcotrafficker policy, which is something different. Let’s not confuse an inert substance with the greedy person. Still, they need violence to rule over Colombia and Latin America."

"Force and violence is exerted against dozens of thousands of farmers by the U.S. government, which is influenced by powerful politicians, mafiosos. Hundreds of Colombians have been massacred, as they massacre children in Gaza. Those massacres haven been perpetrated by politicians who were senators, presidents and ministers, all linked and bribed by the Colombian narcotrafficking mafia. Those who, for decades were allies to the cocaine capos of Colombia, are now linked to the U.S. Florida’s far right, and now allied to the Trump government."

STORYLINE:
Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Tuesday denounced the deployment of the U.S. military to the Caribbean following recent strikes against alleged drug smuggling vessels.
The Trump administration has justified the military action as a necessary escalation to prevent drugs from being trafficked into the U.S.
Speaking at the U.N. General Assembly, Petro talked up his action in attempting to stop the "violent war on drugs" in his region.
"I changed the failed and violent war on drugs for an efficient anti-narcotrafficker policy," he said.
Referring to the U.S. military deployment in the Carribean, Petro said "still, they need violence to rule over Colombia and Latin America."
U.S. President Donald Trump had said on Friday that his country’s military carried out its third fatal strike against an alleged drug smuggling vessel in recent weeks.
Human rights groups have raised concerns that the strikes flout international law.
