"Ecuador is currently facing acts of terrorism disguised as protests. These are not social grievances; they are calculated attacks intended to sow fear and destabilize the entire country. The people, the good people, the good people are here. The good people are in the streets, supporting us. The people who want to work reject these strike measures, while the enemies of progress want, instead, to return the country to chaos."

4. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Daniel Noboa, President of Ecuador:
"We cannot and will not go backward, because doing so would condemn to failure a country that seeks to move forward and prosper. We will break every barrier placed in our way and continue moving forward because we will go to the people. No one will prevent us from reaching the communities, reaching the people, reaching those who need it most; we will never allow that."

STORYLINE:
Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa traveled Wednesday to the northern city where a crowd a day earlier attacked and destroyed a police station.

Noboa was welcomed by local officials in Otavalo, about 37 miles (60 kilometers) north of the capital, Quito, where he forcefully condemned recent protests.

“Enemies of progress want to return the country to chaos,” Noboa said at an event surrounded by his Cabinet.

Outside, soldiers guarded the city’s streets and clashed with a small group of demonstrators protesting the president’s visit.

In Quito, students and labor groups marched through the city center Tuesday, sparking incidents and confrontations with police.

The general strike, led by Indigenous organizations, was called to oppose the government’s elimination of a subsidy that drove up diesel fuel prices nationwide.
