"The moment we entered the planning phase of the Armani exhibition, Mr. Armani appeared – from the beginning – of an absolute rigor but also of a humility uncommon in the great personalities of fashion. He has always said that he did not want to enter into close dialog with great masterpieces (by artists) such as Raffaello, Mantegna, Caravaggio and Pier della Francesca. He would have preferred to build a setting in which his creations dialogued with the feelings and colors, the mood they express in the Brera itinerary."

5. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Angelo Crespi, Brera director:
"Only in some specific cases do clothes compare themselves with a work of art. In three or four cases in which Armani – and we – believed that the materials, the shape, the color of the dresses entered into a truly profitable relationship with the work of art. I think, for example, of Bellini’s Madonna, which is an absolute masterpiece, that is fronted by an iridescent blue dress by Armani. So there is this strong reference between the mantle of the Madonna and the dress of Armani. Or in Bernardino Luini’s chapel where the red color of Armani’s dress and the relationship with the frescoes of this incredible artist of the 1500s, Leonardo Da Vinci’s favorite pupil, explodes."

7. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Angelo Crespi, Brera director:
"We imagined from the beginning that we could celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Armani Maison. We felt it was a duty because Armani – in my opinion – represented the talent and creativity of Made in Italy, of Milan, but above all of the Brera district, since his headquarters border the wall of the historic building. And in my opinion he represented the highest degree of this idea of rigor, essentiality typical of Milanese creativity. Also in design and architecture and then this great ethical desire, not only aesthetic, which made him a great entrepreneur."

9. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Angelo Crespi, Brera director:
"So, this year we will reach about 600,000 visitors. We had an incredible August, one of the top months for the number of visitors – a sign that tourists come to Milan even in August when the city is normally depopulated. We expect this exhibition to bring many visitors to the Pinacoteca, the usual visitors. I am thinking of children and young people, but also many foreigners who obviously want to see the creations of a genius of Made in Italy. Also, because there is no fashion museum in Milan."

STORYLINE:
Giorgio Armani hesitated at first when the Brera Art Gallery proposed an exhibition celebrating the 50th anniversary of his signature label, placing his creations among celebrated Italian masterpieces by such luminaries as Raphael and Caravaggio.
But by the time Armani reached the gallery’s final room on a visit aimed at winning him over, the designer, who became one of the most recognizable names in global fashion, was already mapping out which sartorial creations would best interplay with the Brera’s artistic treasures.
