STORYLINE:
China’s Foreign Ministry on Thursday strongly opposed Taiwanese Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung’s reported visit to New York during the United Nations General Assembly.
Lin attended a reception hosted by American Global Strategies (AGS) on Monday and is expected to meet the self-ruled islands’ diplomatic allies on the sidelines of the UN meeting during his stay, media reported citing sources familiar with the matter.
In Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun lashed out at the U.S. for receiving Lin, saying it “blatantly interferes in China’s internal affairs” and “sends a gravely wrong signal to Taiwan independence separatist forces.”
Guo also urged Taiwan’s remaining diplomatic allies not to be “manipulated and exploited” by pro-independence forces, warning that “tying themselves to Taiwan independence leads nowhere.”
China has long claimed Taiwan as part of its territory and blocked its participation in international events, including the official UNGA gatherings.
Separately, Guo reiterated that “maintaining peace and stability on the (Korean) Peninsula and promoting the political resolution process of the Peninsula issue serve the common interests of all parties” after South Korea warned of the Pyongyang’s growing nuclear capability.
