“It’s true that this is the first truly encouraging sign we’ve had in three and a half years now. That said, we’re trying to remain cautious and keep our distance, because we don’t have any more information than that. And we know that as long as they’re not on the plane, outside Iranian airspace, everything can still change. As long as they’re not free, as long as it’s not done, it’s not done. There’s always a risk of going back to the way things were, so we’re very, very afraid of that.”

“In fact, for us, over the past three and a half years, we’ve learned to take the Iranian authorities’ word with great caution. So, there was that aspect (when Iranian Foreign minister spoke of a ‘final phase’ in the negotiations). It’s true that President Macron himself spoke about it in rather strong terms, well, ‘solid perspective’. For us these terms are… in any case, it’s the first time we’ve heard that in three and a half years. But once again, we’re trying to find the balance between not projecting too much, so as not to be disappointed, and at the same time waiting, waiting to see what happens next.”

“The last time (we spoke to Cecile) was on September 13, so 10 days ago. It was a very brief call, under heavy surveillance, via video conference. We felt that Cecile was very weak, traumatized by what she had experienced in recent months. She has drawn features, she was very, very pale, and we are very worried. She couldn’t tell us much about her conditions of detention. We don’t even know where she is. Apparently, she doesn’t know where she is being detained herself. In fact, the Iranian authorities continue to hide the whereabouts of Cecile and Jacques. They are not being held together.”

STORYLINE:
Dozens of people, including relatives, gathered in central Paris on Thursday evening to demand the release of two French nationals who have been detained in Iran on spy charges for more than 3 years.
Cecile Kohler, 41, and her partner Jacques Paris, 72, were arrested in May 2022 and, until last June, were detained at Tehran’s Evin Prison, a facility notorious for it’s detention of foreign and dual nationals and Westerners, who are then used by Iran as bargaining chips in diplomatic negotiations.
