4. SOUNDBITE (English) Rep. Adam Smith, (D) Washington, House Armed Services Committee:
"My biggest assessment is we need to start having dialog between the Chinese military and the U.S. military. And I think China has been a little reluctant to do that. But it’s really important. As you mentioned, China has built up its military capabilities significantly, particularly in the area of nuclear weapons. And two of the largest nuclear powers in the world need to be talking to each other, particularly considering the fact that we do have some disagreements."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Rep. Adam Smith, (D) Washington, House Armed Services Committee:
"We need more sources of energy. And to my mind, we need to deal with the problem of global warming and the impact of relying excessively on fossil fuels. So if China or anybody, for that matter, is developing better battery technology, better solar power generation, better wind generation, other options, I think that’s something the world could benefit from. What I’d like to see is the US be a bigger part of that. Us to begin to make those investments, which we have to some extent. And then I guess in the far-off fantasyland, imagine that China and the US could work together."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Rep. Adam Smith, (D) Washington, House Armed Services Committee:
"My biggest takeaway is, despite all that (tariffs), there’s a lot of business going on between China and the US. There’s a lot of startups happening, a lot of innovation happening, a lot of businesses growing. Obviously, we’re hearing that they’re making that they’re adding three McDonald’s restaurants a day throughout China. So I guess my thing was there’s still a lot of this is going on despite all of that. But it makes it all the more important that we can resolve some of those differences. So I think both of our countries could benefit from a better trading relationship."

STORYLINE:
A US lawmaker who sits on the House Armed Services Committee on an official visit to China said on Thursday that the militaries of the US and China need to improve their dialog.
Speaking at the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai, Democrat Rep. Adam Smith said that China had been a "little reluctant" to have a dialog with the US but that it was important given the scale of China’s nuclear military development.
"Two of the largest nuclear powers in the world need to be talking to each other, particularly considering the fact that we do have some disagreements," he said.
The visit to Shanghai is part of the first visit from the House of Representatives to China since 2019.
The trip comes as tensions have risen between the two countries over trade, technology and opposing views on global conflicts.
Smith also discussed energy and told media that the world could benefit from greater energy technologies, wherever they come from, adding that he would like to see the US a bigger part of that.
"And then I guess in the far-off fantasyland, (I) imagine that China and the US could work together."
"I think both of our countries could benefit from a better trading relationship."
