Michael McHale, president of the National Association of Police Organizations, spoke on the third night of the Republican National Convention on Aug. 26, 2020. During his remarks, he said "Kamala Harris’ legislation to further restrict police," and that "Senator Harris’ legislation provides less training, not more, for law enforcement." Harris has co-sponsored at least two pieces of legislation that would require more training for police, specifically for “training on racial bias and the duty to intervene" as part of the Justice in Policing Act of 2020. Another bill she co-sponsored, the "Police Training and Independent Review Act of 2019" would have provided grants for states requiring "fair and impartial police training."
