The class of Covid: What happened with England’s exam results?

Today, students in the time of Covid finally had some good news. More than a quarter of pupils in England got top grades in their GCSEs. 

But the agony for more than half a million BTEC students continues, as the awarding body pulled their results just hours before they were due to be issued. 

So how did we get here, who is to blame, and how has this affected the hopes and dreams of the Covid generation?

We spoke to the Schools Minister for England Nick Gibb, and asked him about the warning, weeks ago, by the Department for Education’s former Director General Sir Jon Coles.

He told Mr Gibb that the system could lead to hundreds of thousands of students being given the wrong grades.
