3. SOUNDBITE (Lithuanian) Gitanas Nausėda, President of Lithuania:
“The first job, as you already know, is defined in the Constitution. Would it be the acceptance of the Government’s powers and the formation of the Government again? I have already done that work in 2019. I think that the president, even in the case of what is said, to be a more technical reorganization of the Government. However, the president must take the initiative and introduce certain corrections if he deems it necessary to do so. I think it needs to be done. Well, after that we are already looking at the next political season. It is very important to me that a strong ruling coalition is really formed and that this and the other ruling coalition are really socially sensitive and that they really understand the very clear priorities that I have formulated. Priorities of the welfare state. Reducing social exclusion. I believe everything will be fine.”

Lithuanians are casting votes in a presidential election on Sunday at a time when Russian gains on the battlefield in Ukraine are fueling greater fears about Moscow’s intentions.

Popular incumbent, Gitanas Nausėda cast his vote at a polling station – he’s favored to win another five-year term in office.

Those concerns are particularly pronounced in the strategically important Baltic region.

But there are eight candidates running in all, making it unlikely that he or any other can muster the 50% of the votes needed to win outright on Sunday.

In that case, a runoff will be held on May 26.
