The corruption trial of Sen. Bob Menendez has begun in Manhattan federal court as dozens of prospective jurors were told about the case.

Judge Sidney H. Stein told them Monday of charges in which Menendez is accused of accepting bribes of gold and cash to use his influence to aid three New Jersey businessmen.

The 70-year-old Democrat sat with his lawyers as Stein addressed possible jurors. He’s on trial with two of the businessmen. A third is cooperating and has agreed to testify at a trial slated to last up to two months.

Menendez has pleaded not guilty to charges including bribery, extortion and fraud.

His wife will be tried separately.
