“We are currently inside the underground town of the Karadjordjevic family. This is a secret wartime military command shelter that was built between 1930 and 1934, when, unfortunately, King Alexander (Karadjordjevic) was assassinated and the construction stopped after that, but you’ll see, the majority of work that was planned back then was completed.”

“When the royal family left this place, some people thought that the king, his guard and the royal family left behind unknown treasures. People used this space for shelter during the war, but we’ve also had treasure hunters come here, they searched all the wall crevices of the bunker, checking to see whether there was something of value hidden here that the king, in his rush to leave this place, left behind.”

14. Various of photo and maps on table

“This space was abandoned. All the twelve exits and entrances that I’ve mentioned were open, anyone could have walked in. The objects that are now here as part of the museum collection weren’t here, these were empty quarters and walls that some local people used for drying out animal skins because of adequate temperature and humidity, some others planted mushrooms. This was an abandoned space that anyone could have used according to their needs.”
