1. SOUNDBITE (English) Ruby Chen, father of deceased U.S.-Israeli hostage Itay Chen, whose body is being held by Hamas:
“The hostage families welcome the ceasefire agreement ending the fighting in the northern border with Lebanon. But we are also deeply disappointed that it doesn’t include a piece of (for)the hostages that have been held in captivity for 116 days, 101 hostages, including seven US citizens. And we feel this is a missed opportunity to tie in the hostages in this agreement that was signed today.”

“The challenge is that when it came to the Lebanon peace, the Israeli government did not need to pay any political peace that would threaten the existing coalition of government. Unfortunately, that is not the case when it comes to the Gaza peace.”

“This gives a glimpse of hope that the ability to get a deal with the players that initiated this attack on Israel. They’ve seen the destruction that has fallen upon them after attacking Israel. And I hope to believe that Hamas also understands that now is the time to be more flexible and understand that they are isolated, and they are the last ones that are still fighting.”

STORYLINE:
The father of a U.S.-Israeli hostage whose body is being held in Gaza said on Tuesday families of those still being held captive by Hamas welcomed a ceasefire deal between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah group but wanted part of the agreement to include a return of their loved ones still being held in Gaza.

Instead, he said, the deal was was narrow, limited and confined only to Lebanon.

“We feel this is a missed opportunity to tie in the hostages in this agreement that was signed today,” said Ruby Chen, whose son, Itay, was, according to Israeli intelligence, killed in the October 7 attack last year.

Around 100 hostages are still being held in Gaza, at least a third of whom are believed to be dead.

Most of the other hostages Hamas captured in the October 7, 2023 attack were released during a ceasefire last year.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s security Cabinet has approved a ceasefire deal with Hezbollah, clearing the way for the truce to take effect.
