"She keeps the store really clean. We don’t have any issues because we have a cat. Which is huge, especially in New York where it’s so dirty and rodent filled. I think a lot of people feel that it’s a good environment when they see a cat because they know there are no issues, and we firmly stand behind that."

"You know, New York City is an island, just in general, so the way I look at it is, ‘Where the hell are they gonna go?’ So like roaches and mice, you know, they are always around but having the cat presence, I guess they smell each other and they know what’s going on so, really we barely have any incidents."

"I think it’s like a cultural thing. Like a lot of bodegas have, there’s a bodega down the street that has a cat as well. People come in just for them. So they bring customers in. They have a lot of fans. They come in to pet them, to play with them. I’m a dog person, but cats as opposed to dogs are a little less maintenance so they are a lot easier to like play with play with and be around when you’re working as well. So you don’t want to distract the workers but you also want them to take care of the animal, you know?

"The inspectors give you a hard time for it, you know, but here, we don’t usually put them on top of here, stored like right here. Like when you see them, they always go into the basement. They stay away from the food part. I understand that, but the cats are trained. They don’t even come around the food. It’s amazing. Maintenance, cleaning, everything. You know what I mean? It’s a beautiful thing, the cleanest animal in New York is the bodega cat."

"It’s not just to keep the store clean and keep the mice away, it’s becoming part of the business, you know, he’s one of us. We feel like the cat is one of us. The whole day we stay with him, he make our time go by fast, play with him, you know, bring him. People love him, he’s lucky."

STORYLINE:
Bodega cats in New York City are widely loved feline workers in the Big Apple’s convenience stores.
Most store owners keep them for companionship, and as little salesmen that bring customers in and build rapport.
Some say they keep the mice and rats at bay.
