STORYLINE:
Catholic faithful in Kenya gathered at Holy Family Basilica in Nairobi on Thursday, as cardinals meet in Vatican City to vote for a new pope.
About 133 cardinals are participating in the papal conclave at the Sistine Chapel.
The Kenyan Cardinal John Njue, however, is not in attendance, citing poor health and insisting he has not received communication to attend the conclave.
Despite lack of presentation, Kenyan Catholics hope for a sincere election.
“We expect a very good turn up and a very sincere one whereby even if we are not seen to participate within the election of the new pope, we are going to see exactly a change which a new pope will bring to Kenya and world all over," said Patrick Muli, a Catholic congregant.
On the second voting day, black smoke appeared from the chimney on top of the Sistine Chapel, indicating that a new pope had not been elected.
Under the established process, cardinals now cast two votes each morning and two each afternoon, continuing daily until a candidate secures the two-thirds majority required to be named the next pope.
The last few popes have been elected within a few days, but there is no formal deadline. Electors must be under 80, and are more geographically diverse than ever.
“This is a matter of divine intervention. If God intervenes that the pope will come from an African country, we will appreciate, if He says he will come from Arab countries, we will appreciate,” said James Kuria, another Catholic congregant.
