1. Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Pierbattista Pizzaballa, and Greek Orthodox Patriarch Theophilos III at presser
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem:
“Humanitarian aid is not only necessary, it is a matter of life and death. Refusing it is not a delay, but a sentence. Every hour without food, water, medicine, and shelter causes deep harm. We have seen it, men holding out in the sun for hours in the hope of a simple meal. This is a humiliation that is hard to bear when you see it with your own eyes. It is morally unacceptable and unjustifiable. We therefore support the work of all humanitarian actors, local and international, Christians and Muslims, religious and secular, who are risking everything to bring life to this sea of human devastation. And today we raise our voices in an appeal to the leaders of this region and the world. There can be no future based on captivity, displacement of Palestinians or revenge. There must be a way that restores life, dignity, and all lost humanity.”

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem:
“I can say that Gaza is almost totally destroyed and no one is exempted. It’s not the first time it happens. It happens also in the Holy Family more than years ago, St. Porphyrious (church) in the first weeks of the war. And every time was a mistake. Maybe it’s a mistake, I don’t know, because when you keep bombing everywhere, but we cannot have proof of everything, I suppose. We hope there’ll be an investigation and we’ll clarify.“

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Theophilos III, Greek Orthodox Patriarch:
“This is true, I mean, the first experience and the impression that we had, it was when we, on our way to the Church of the Holy Family, we saw people stranded, elderly people, women, young boys, and this was the impression, that those people They looked totally starved and hungry. And we were wondering how those people, they are living, they are surviving. No food, no water, no place to live. We saw some tents, which actually were made of paper and nylon. It was a real very sad impression. “

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem:
“I think it’s important to say that we are denouncing what is going in Gaza. But we have also to acknowledge the solidarity of many parts of the Israeli society. Also thanks to them we could do what we are doing, delivering everything. So we are not against Israel, we are not against the Jewish people. But we need to say with frankness and clarity that this policy of the Israeli government in Gaza is unacceptable. And morally we cannot justify it.”

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem:

STORYLINE:
In Jerusalem, top church leaders called on the international community to help bring an end to the war in Gaza after making a rare visit to the conflict-ridden territory last week.
The strike drew condemnation from the pope and U.S. President Donald Trump, and prompted statements of regret from Israel, which said it was an accident.
