STORYLINE:
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Monday that a ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia shows the "strength of ASEAN’s convening power."

Speaking at an Association of Southeast Asian Nations conference in Jakarta, Indonesia, Ibrahim said ASEAN member states’ "constructive engagement" meant regional stability could be safeguarded.

"The presence and cooperation of all parties reaffirm that peace is best achieved through dialogue, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to stability," he added.

In his speech, Ibrahim also thanked U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, as well as their Cambodian and Thai counterparts.

Thailand and Cambodia agreed Monday to an unconditional ceasefire during a meeting in Malaysia, in a significant breakthrough to resolve five days of deadly border clashes that have killed at least 35 people and displaced more than 260,000.

The fighting began Thursday after a land mine explosion along the border wounded five Thai soldiers. Both sides blamed each other for starting the clashes.

Despite the ceasefire, the Thai army accused Cambodia of launching attacks in multiple areas early Tuesday but Cambodia said there was no firing in any location.

With lingering tensions, the ceasefire appeared to hold.
