(4 Dec 1978) RR7849A ANGOLA A MEETING WITH SAVIMBI
A London Television News team went into southern Angola in August 1978 to inverview Jonas Savimbi, leader of the UNITA guerrillas fighting the Marxist government of President Nheto. The Cuban-backed government troops then launched a major offensive in the south and the crew was ambushed. They trekked through danger and hardship for nearly two months before they met Savimbi and secured the
interview at one of the UNITA camps. Then came more weeks of trekking before a rescue operation mounted from London flew them out from a jungle airstrip. This report includes file footage to explain the
background to the Angolan struggle and its place in the current drive for East-West detente in Africa.
