"Our flight was fairly reasonable because I travel with my mom and so I always like to travel first class. So I really prepare for this season maybe three months in advance. So I was able to really get a better flight. It was our hotel, I think this year the hotel accommodations were very expensive."

STORYLINE:
Highways and airports are likely to be jammed the next few days as Americans head out for Memorial Day weekend getaways and then return home.

AAA predicts this will be the busiest start-of-summer weekend in nearly 20 years, with 43.8 million people expected to travel at least 50 miles from home between Thursday and Monday. The Transportation Security Administration says up to 3 million might pass through airport checkpoints on Friday alone.

The annual expression of wanderlust is happening at a time when Americans tell pollsters they are worried about the economy and the direction of the country.

Kathy Larko who is visiting Chicago with her husband, feels like the costs of flights and hotels have impacted her travel plans this Memorial Day weekend. "It made me used my miles to book travel because the flights were expensive," said Larko.

Travelers expressed at O’Hare on Thursday that many times traveling feels like a necessity they must plan for.

"I really prepare for this season maybe three months in advance," said Larisa Latimer who was traveling with her elderly mother.

"But everything is up priced, rental cars is up and like I said the hotel accommodations," expressed Latimer.
